Classification of the Sardinian pine woodlands

Mediterranean pine woodlands are one of the most common wooded vegetation types across Basin and included in two habitats European interest as they have great conservation importance. We studied class Pinetea halepensis dominated by Pinus halepensis, P. pinaster, pinea Sardinia (Italy) with aim to clarify their syntaxonomic position. compiled a dataset 66 original relevés, complemented holotypes similar formerly described for Italy Corsica (France). classified woodlands, native Island San Pietro, association Erico arboreae-Pinetum halepensis. growing on limestones south-western coast new Smilaco asperae-Pinetum typical coastal dunes Asparago horridi-Pinetum also north-eastern pinaster Arbuto unedonis-Pinetum pinastri, which we recognised subassociations, typicum cephalantheretosum longifoliae, ecologically distinguished xerophilous mesophilous conditions, respectively. Furthermore, putatively only stabilised sand Sardinia, Querco calliprini-Pinetum pineae. This study represents first complete survey classification Sardinian allowing better understanding ecology, floristic composition differences other woodlands.
